State

California area codes

California has more telephone area codes than any other U.S. state — more than 40 active area codes as of 2025 — reflecting a population of roughly 39 million. Its three original 1947 area codes were 213, 415, and 916.

The "most of any state" point is well established; the exact active-code count and population are widely reported figures, not drawn here from a single primary census/NANPA enumeration.
